BARLOW ~ Vernis “Von” Barlow was born July 31, 1943 to Varner & Clara Barlow in Cordele, Georgia, both who preceded him in eternal rest. He leaves to cherish his memory, children, Veronica Burgess (Carlton), Victoria Halyard (Robert), Varner Woodruff Barlow, Crystal Cherry Turner, Christopher Cherry (Monique), Jonah Barlow; grandchildren & great grandchildren; a host of extended family and friends, including Mary Ford, a great long-time friend.
Von was educated in Duval County Public School System where he recognized his life’s destiny to follow the call of the drums. He was a family man with lots of charisma and loved everyone. Von was a “Mr. Fix It” handy man with lots of creativity. He was skillful in all facets of percussive music and has played with legends of music as O. C. Smith, Jack Wilson, Lou Rawls, Della Reese, Bobby Blue Bland (to name a few). Von released his own CD, “Von Barlow’s Million Dollar Street”, showcasing his own musical philosophy and creative spontaneity. He was a member of the original rhythm section that accompanied contenders for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival’s Great American Piano Competition and was inducted as a member of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame in 2007. He has toured the world with his “clix stix”, entertaining audiences in Canada, Japan, Morocco, France, Italy and England. Von will surely be missed.
Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Vernis W. Barlow will be 12:00 Noon March 10 , 2020 at Greater Harvest Christian Fellowship, 9113 Ridge Blvd, Eric Jackson, Pastor. Family will receive friends Monday at The Soutel Chapel 4 – 6 PM. Interment at Restlawn (South) Memorial Park. Because of the love of his family arrangements entrusted to J. E.
