Vera Jordan

Jordan ~ Vera Byron Smith was born to the late Joseph Lee Byron and Abbie Mormon in Milan, Georgia, August 2, 1935.  She was the seventh of thirteen children.  Vera was preceded in death by her grandson, Randy D. Smith; brothers, Joseph Lee Byron, Robert Byron, Chester Hurst, Bobby Byron; sisters, Bernice Byron, Zetta Bell Byron, Jessie Lee Byron, Ernestine Byron, Dorothy Byron, Lorene Byron; and best friend, Mrs. Earnie Mae Woods.

She attended Telfair County High School but later moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she graduated from New Stanton High School.  Vera was employed at the Thunderbird Hotel on Arlington Expressway and later employed with the City of Jacksonville and worked with Jacksonville Housing and Urban Development for thirty-five years where she was well known for her western outfits.

Vera married Wilbur Smith and from that union, three children were born ~ Demetrius Smith (Loretha), Wilbur Randolph Smith, Shirl Lindell “Little Mamma/Shorty” Smith Rosier.  She is also survived by grandchildren, Trijuana Rosier, Otis Rosier, Demetrius Smith Jr, Dupree Smith, Triniece Smith; fourteen great grandchildren; brothers, Alner Hurst, Elton Hurst (Shirleen); brother-in-law, Spencer Sampson; sister-in-law, Lillie Townsend; best friends forever, Mrs. Mary James, Mrs. Helen Conyers; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Vera Byron Smith Jordan will be 11:00AM Saturday, March 30, 2024 at The Soutel Chapel.  Visitation Friday from 5 – 7:00 PM at The Soutel Chapel.  Because of the love of her family, arrangements entrusted to J.
