Kelly ~ Thelma Thomasina Mosley Kelly, “Tag”, was born in Duval County, Florida February 22, 1927. She was the daughter of Willie Napoleon and Daisy May Livingston Mosley. Thelma departed this earthly life Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the age of ninety-six.
She attended the public schools of Duval County, Florida completing her academic work at Old Stanton High School in downtown Jacksonville. At an early age, Thelma attended Howard’s Memorial First Born Holiness Church with her family. She later joined New Bethel AME Church of Jacksonville.
Thelma was a native of Jacksonville. While in Jacksonville, she worked in various jobs, most notably as an elevator operator in downtown Furchgott’s department store. In 1959, Thelma decided to move to Detroit, Michigan in search of different employment opportunities. While in Detroit, she was employed as a nursing assistant. After a brief illness while in Detroit, Thelma returned to Jacksonville and retired.
She was married to the late Samuel Kelly of Jacksonville, Florida. No children were born to this union. Thelma was a strong, determined, and resourceful individual. While retired, she maintained a household and was well known in the Tyler Street community. Thelma was creative and innovative all her life. Known as a talented cook from her early days, she continued her cooking expertise using traditional methods to prepare her food.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Daisy Mosley. Thelma was the eldest of nine children, and three of her siblings preceded her death: Beatrice Mosley, Paul David Mosley, and Isiah Mosley. She leaves to cherish her memory: brothers, Dr. Samuel N. Mosley and James (Shirley) Mosley, of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters: Dorothy M. Peterson of Johnston, South Carolina, Bertha M. Anderson, and Frances P. Mosley, both of Jacksonville, Florida; sister-in-law, Evelyn Mosley of Jacksonville, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other sorrowing family members and friends.
Graveside Service for Mrs. Thelma Thomasina Mosley Kelly will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 10, 2023, Edgewood Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday from 5 – 7 PM at The Soutel Chapel.
