She attended the public schools of Duval County, Florida completing her academic work at Old Stanton High School in downtown Jacksonville.  At an early age, Thelma attended Howard’s Memorial First Born Holiness Church with her family. She later joined New Bethel AME Church of Jacksonville.

Thelma was a native of Jacksonville. While in Jacksonville, she worked in various jobs, most notably as an elevator operator in downtown Furchgott’s department store. After a brief illness while in Detroit, Thelma returned to Jacksonville and retired.
