Chisholm ~ Mary Nelson-Chisholm was born to the late Reverend Alex and Mattie Nelson January 5, 1939, in Davenport, Florida. She went on to be with the Lord November 26, 2022. Mary was the sixth of seven children. She is survived by her loving sister, Naomi Nelson Evans (Louisville, Georgia) and was proceeded in death by her sister, Ruthie Mae Nelson Flowers; brothers, James Nelson, Richard Henry Nelson, Louis Robert Nelson, and Eugene Nelson. Mary was always referred to as the baby sister.
Mary graduated from Oakland High School in 1957. After graduating she decided a change was needed and moved to Jacksonville, Florida to attend business school. Mary worked in hospitality services, as well as the Duval County Public School System. While living in Jacksonville, Mary met Carey Chisholm; they were married in 1966. To this union were born Malik Shabazz and Robin Chisholm. Mary and Carey were the loving godparents of Khalilah Ponder (Antwan), the late Jermaine Dowdell, and special friend, Aaron Lawson.
Mary eventually transitioned from the business sector to start her own private home childcare. Affectionately known as Ms. Mary, she provided early childcare to many children in the community while creating a safe, loving, and nurturing environment. Such a positive impact was made on the lives of the children that they continue to love her to this day.
Mary was a loving grandmother to Tory Spinner, Jabari Chisholm, Zhamir Shabazz, and a loving great grandmother to Va’Shawn Spinner. She leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
