Calhoun ~ Minister Mary E. Calhoun, 84, of Yulee, Florida, passed away Thursday, August 29, 2024, with loved ones by her side. Mary E. Calhoun was born in Lake City, Florida. She is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. Mary graduated from Stanton High School in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Art degree from Edward Waters College in 1964. She was employed as a business education instructor for the Nassau County School District in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and was later employed as a librarian in 1968. Her love for the library influenced her to further her education in librarianship, where she received her Master of Library Science Degree from Florida State University in 1973. During her tenure in Nassau County, she taught Middle School, and adult education.
Mrs. Calhoun became certified in Clinical Pastoral Education and served as a chaplain for U F Health Jacksonville, formerly Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, for a period of two years. She later became employed as a Learning Resource Specialist for Florida Community College Jacksonville Betty P. Cook Center in Nassau County. She served as the National Chairperson for the National Christian Board of Education of the Church of God by Faith, Inc., and was a member of the National Missionary Board. Mary served as pastor of Living Word Community Church of God by Faith of Folkston, Georgia. Minister Mary E. Calhoun was a member of Church of God by Faith, Inc., under the pastorate of the Jacksonville District Elder Dr. Harry J. Johnson. Minister Calhoun, a retired librarian from the Nassau County Public Schools and Learning Resource Specialist from FCCJ Betty P. Cook Nassau Center of Yulee and CTI Bible College.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Deacon James Calhoun; daughter, Pamela Calhoun; parents, Louise Brooks Cobb, Raymond Cobb, Alton Smith (Rosetta); sisters, Loretta Moore, Evelyn Cobb, Lorraine Cobb. Mary is survived by her children, Darrell Calhoun, Cordell Calhoun (Angel), Cynthia Calhoun; stepson, William Jefferson; thirteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; sister, Linda Hanrahan (Michael) of Austin, Texas, Vanessa Thurman (Lawrence) of Manassas Virginia; brothers, James Bubba Smith, Harry Smith; many families and friends.
Funeral service for Minister Mary E. Calhoun will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 11:00 AM, Journey Church, 95707 Amelia Concourse, Fernandina Beach. The family will receive friends Friday, September 6th from 5 to 7 PM at Solid Rock Church of God by Faith, 86138 Palm Tree Drive, Yulee. Burial will immediately follow at Whispering Pines Cemetery, Yulee, Florida. Because of the love of her family, arrangements entrusted to J. E.
