Miller ~ Kevin Miller, beloved son, brother, father, uncle, neighbor, and many other affectionate titles. His life has become a memory, now this memory becomes a treasure. He was born in Jacksonville, Florida to Walter J. Whitehead and Celia A. Miller.
Kevin was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by a very – very large family to the likes of a wonderful, majestic mother, Celia A. Miller; daughter, DéJanae A. Miller (her mother, Nyesha); brother, Zachary Miller; nephews, Caden Smith-Miller, Ashton “Guardian” Miller; nieces, Azjah-Mahri, Ava Grace; a host of beloved cousins, Marva Watkins (Richard), Tracy Iszard (Reggie) and their offsprings, Xavier, Kayva, Errin, Rachquel, Randle; Craig Miller (Brenda & Kimberly) and family, Alnita, Viola, Christopher, Zayair Miller, Alberta and Stephanie and the rest of the Gibson clan; DeDe, Vaile and Wayne, Keith, Beverly, Deborah, Lanette; not to mention life long guardians, mentors, and close friends, Joseph & Nellie Henry, David Abramowitz, George Turner, Karatana Smith; members of Raines class of ’94; the 1998 graduating class of Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Correctional Officers.
Kevin received early spiritual and biblical foundation in attendance and membership at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church, Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr. He accepted and professed his belief in the Savior Jesus Christ at the youthful age of eight and was also baptized by Bishop McKissick, Sr. He participated in many church activities – Cub & Boy Scouts, BBIC Youth Basketball (Mr. Lowe), Sunday School (R. Stephens), Children’s Choir (W. Robinson).
Kevin joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Raines “Ichi Bon” High School where he overachieved as well as scored a perfect 350 score in brutal basic training regiment, where many men faltered. He also achieved other awards, champion swimmer, marksmen sharpshooter with pistol and rifle, toured the world during this tenure under leadership training in Iceland, England, and Japan.
Kevin forged a work ethic early alongside his brother landscaping yards in historic Durkeeville and working in the family store, Miller’s Grocery and Publix Supermarkets. He continued this work ethic throughout his employment history with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (Corrections) and the City of Jacksonville Waste Division.
Kevin’s lovable quirkiness and talents were always on display at any given moment. His love to dance on any public stage was always refreshing to all those in witness. Kevin’s love for chess was unsurpassed, ask his chess compadre, James. He had an undiscovered talent as an artist that was secretly enjoyed by those close to him. Those that knew him loved him because he showed everyone actions of love. It is this treasure that he now leaves us to always cherish.
