Jerome Harper Obituary

HARPER ~   Jerome Harper, the son of John and Lucinda Carter Harper, was born June 2, 1931 in Gainesville, Florida.  At an early age, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, and was baptized at Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church and later became a member of Greater Grant Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church under the leadership of Pastor Tan Moss.  Jerome received his education in Jacksonville, Florida.

On January 25, 1963, he was united in holy matrimony to Agnes Christine Sherrer. He worked as a city bus driver for Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) more than twenty five years, retiring in 1994.  After retirement, he continued working with JTA as a part-time supervisor until 2013.  Jerome will be remembered for his warm smile and friendly disposition.  He never met a stranger and those who met him were impressed with his personality. Jerome was a man who was held in the highest regard and esteem.  Many were impressed with his overwhelming presence of a warm and gentle soul.

Jerome’s life exemplified the fruit of the Spirit as recorded in Galatians 5:22 – 23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.”  He was a faithful care giver to his wife Agnes who preceded him in death.

Jerome was preceded in eternal rest by his wife, Agnes Christine Sherrer Harper; granddaughter, Taylor Christine Renea Boatman; parents, John and Lucinda Carter Harper; brothers, Marvin Hawkins, John Harper, Jr.; and sister, Maddie Jewel Harper.  He entered eternal rest January 26, 2021. Those who will forever cherish his memory,  daughters, Kathy Harper, Suzan McIntyre, Jonese Harper, Jeralyn (Ricky) Harper, and Terry Harper; grandchildren, Petria, Tevecia (Fred), Shiaka, Terrell, Isaiah, Trevaris and Teralyn; great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Joseph McClary; sisters-in-law, Melzetta Sherrer and Wynester Sherrer; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless friends including special relationships with Marvin Hawkins, Dr. John Lewis, Valerie “San” Davis and his Dawson, Georgia and Gainesville, Florida families.
