George Walter Fort Sr. answered a higher call and was promoted from this life peacefully surrounded by his family. He was known as “Daddy” to all that affectionately knew him. George was a shining light to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and unwavering faith in God. He was born June 24,1933, in Alachua County Florida, to the late Herbert and Mamie Fort. George was the eldest of his siblings. George joined in matrimony with Camalean Wilson-Fort, in June 1955, she preceded him in death. He later married Betty Jean Freeman-Fort, who also preceded him in death. His sons Roy Chester Mann and Walter Darrel Fort, a grandson, Trenton Fort also preceded him in death.
George attended and graduated from Shell High School, in Alachua County Florida, where he was voted Mr. Shell High, during his senior year. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he was stationed at Fort Benning Georgia, Third Infantry Division. After faithfully serving his country, he moved to Jacksonville Florida, where he attended Body and Fender school. George then began his career as a Longshoreman, ILA, LOCAL 1408, where he served for over fifty years.
George was ever faithful to God, Country, and his family. His deep faith, and love for God, comforted him through life, and sculpted his character. He joined Greater Macedonia Baptist Church, and was a faithful member for over fifty years, his generosity and love for God knew no bounds.
George is survived and will be forever missed by his loving family: Choise Stewart (Albert), Charon Grant (Kelvin) of Atlanta Georgia, Tamiko Sample (Michael) of Round Rock, Texas, Robin Fort, Johnny Freeman (Latausa), Deshun Fort, Mietta Fort, of Dallas Texas, Felisha Marshall (Terrance), George W. Fort Jr., Thareus Fort, Yannesha Morris, Daniel Fort, Cynthia Robertson, Maddie Leon, Rosetta Branch-Haines, and Lottie Mann; two sisters, Ora Daniels, of Orlando Florida, and Claranell Lattimore, of St. Petersburg Florida; two brothers, Clarence Fort (Yvonne) of Tampa Florida and Willie Fort (Idella) of Atlanta Georgia; three sisters-in-law, Viola Lewis, Carla Hillard (Charles), and Helen Austin; forty grandchildren; fifty-three great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. His memory lives on with his nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life service for George Walter Fort, Sr. will be 12:00PM Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Greater Macedonia Baptist Church of Northside. Visitation Tuesday from 5 – 7:00 PM at The Soutel Chapel. Interment in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens. Because of the love of his family, arrangements entrusted to J. E.
