Harper ~ On Wednesday, 15 February 2023, Evelyn Lanet Harper, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother of many passed away at the age of eighty. Evelyn graduated from Valdosta High School in Valdosta, Georgia, and went on to attend Savannah State University and majored in music. She shared her joy of music with her children and friends and some of our fondest memories is of her singing to her children and their friends during their many slumber parties. She also loved dancing and there are so many memories of her coming home after spending an evening out and waking all her children up to show them the latest dances.
As a young adult she went to Newark, New Jersey, to visit her cousins and while out on a night in town, she was encouraged to sing on stage. Although shy, she sang on stage and later was offered a recording contract. However, her experience as an only child prioritized the importance of a mother’s presence and the importance of keeping her family close which was common theme throughout her life.
She loved reading, clothes, perfume and enjoying time with her kids. As a single mom, she balanced work and family gatherings, events, and concerts. Her kids will always remember going to see James Brown in concert focusing on the sign of the times – ‘Say it loud - I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD’. She retired from Anchor Hockings Glass Company where she referred and helped so many friends and family get hired as well.
Evelyn was known as a fierce protector of her kids, a loving daughter, and a kind neighbor with a generous spirit.
Celebration of Life service for Ms. Evelyn L. Harper will be 10:00AM Saturday, March 4, 2023 at The Soutel Chapel. Visitation Friday from 5 – 7:00 PM at The Soutel Chapel.
