MITCHELL ~ Edward Charles “Mitch” Mitchell was born to Charlie J. and Annie Grace Mitchell September 30, 1950 in Thomasville, Georgia. He was the oldest of four boys to bless the Mitchell family. In the mid 1950s, the Mitchell family settled in Waverly, Florida.
Mitch graduated from Roosevelt Senior High School in Lake Wales, Florida, June 1968. Four months later, Mitch enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed in Maryland where he proudly served as a Naval Fireman aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865) for two years. Due to injury, he was relieved of duty in October 1974 with a National Defense Service Medal. In 1974-1975, Mitch attended the University of Maryland where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education. He became certified in Art Education for the states of Maryland and Florida.
Mitch decided to settle in Jacksonville, Florida. It was Jacksonville where he began his lifelong career as a train conductor for CSX Transportation. His career spanned over three decades.
Mitch is preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest and Al Mitchell. He is survived by his only son, Eddie Charles McCormick, Sr; grandchildren, Jesika McCormick and Eddie Charles McCormick, Jr.; brother, Chauncey Mitchell; uncle, Oscar Killings; and cousin, Chris Miller
Graveside Service for Edward Charles Mitchell will be 1:30 PM, Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road. Family will receive friends Tuesday at The Soutel Chapel from 5 – 7 PM. Because of the love of his family, arrangements entrusted to J. E.
