COVINGTON ~ Mrs. Delia P. “La Ma” Covington was born October 15, 1928, in Dooly County, Georgia, and lived a peaceful, joyful life for almost 93 years! She transitioned from this life October 5, 2021, at the River City Rehab Center, Jacksonville, Florida, where she loved the residents and staff. She was beautiful inside and out, and her memory will be cherished by those that knew her.
As a young adult, she married Bonnie Brown (deceased), then moved to Jacksonville, where she lived much of her life, and raised their two children. Her parents, brother, and sister left Georgia and joined her in Jacksonville. The family has always wondered where they would be, if she hadn’t told her fiancé that the only way she would marry him was if he took her out of the country!
Mrs. Covington was a cosmetologist for 60 years and was a faithful member of the Orange Blossom Cosmetology Association/Lovely Ladies. She enjoyed her church, family and friends, traveling, and fishing. For many years, she was a devoted member of The Sanctuary @ Mt. Calvary under the stewardship of Reverend Dr. John Allen Newman, Senior Pastor.
She is survived by her daughter, former Congresswoman Corrine Brown, and son, Bonnie David Brown (Barbara); godson, Rufus Carlton Brown; grandchildren, Shantrel A. Brown, Esq., Traesa Brown, Shawon Myers (Anitra), Troy Moore, and Terrance Moore; great grandchildren; nieces, Gloria Simmons, Rosemary Anderson (Francis), and Sandra Roberts (Willie); great-niece, Dr. Kedra Fields Williams (Tyra), and great-nephew, James LaVar Fields (Amanda); dear family friend, Armenia Shahab Green; a host of other relatives and friends.
Preceding Mrs. Covington in death were her second husband, William I. “Cub” Covington, Navy retiree; father, Otis Clemons; mother, Sarah M. “Big Ma” Morris; brother, Anderson Clemons; and sister, Mattie P. Simmons.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Mrs. Delia P. “La Ma” Covington, 10 AM Friday, October 15, 2021 (La Ma’s Birthday), at Evergreen Cemetery. Because of the love of her family, arrangements entrusted to J. E. Fralin & Sons Funeral & Cremation Services, 5065 Soutel Dr, 904.924.9400.
