Beverly Lewis Obituary

Beverly Ann McNeil Lewis, 80, passed away peacefully from this life the morning of August 8, 2022 after a gradual decline in health. She was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to the union of the Late Wilma & Herbert McNeil. Sadly Beverly’s mother passed away giving birth to her. Her father’s parents, Benjamin & Sarah McNeil (grandparents)assumed responsibility to rear her straight from the hospital as their own child. She was never looked at as a grand, but one of the McNeil children. She attended the Hygenic Elementary School in Steelton, Pennsylvania and graduated from the former John Harris High School in Harrisburg class of 1960.

She was reared and brought up at her family church, the Emanuel COGIC under the leadership of the late Bishop D.A. Burton and the current pastor, Bishop David M. Screven. She not only received the Lord as her savior, she served and loved her church. She served in many capacities, to include, Sunday School Superintendent and dedicated choir member, to name a few. She was one of the lead soloist’s for the Gospel Choir, whenever she sang she did not need a microphone. After retiring from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation with over 32 years of service, she traveled caring for the sick. She was than led to move to Columbia, South Carolina where she aided her sister Diana in ministering to the homeless. After her assignment was completed with her sister, she joined fellowship with the Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Anthony McCallum. There she served faithfully as a member of the Adult Missionaries, Sunday School, Wednesday Bible Study, visitation of the sick on the 4th Sunday, Support of the sick and shut- in, with visitations and monetary gifts, This servant fed the homeless and the SAC of Love, a program to feed school children over the weekends. In early 2020 she relocated to live with her beloved son in Jacksonville, Florida. There she joined in fellowship with the church he attended, the Pleasant Grove Church under the pastorate of Apostle Michael Walker. There she assisted her son in the feeding ministry. Sister Bev was the true definition of a missionary, she had a heart for the needy. One of her favorite things to do in her leisure time was cooking and serving others. However, we cannot forget her love for watching and playing Wheel of Fortune. Family and friends alike knew not to call between the hour of 7pm to 7:30pm. She was excellent at getting the correct answers. She would have been a great contestant. In addition to her parents and grandparents, Beverly was preceded in death by her siblings, Madelyn “Carol” Britton, Rosalie Johnson, Daisy Chapman, Jessie McNeil, Dorothy Mills and Diana James. She leaves to cherish her memories her son, Wayne H. McNeil of Jacksonville, Florida; her siblings, Irene Fleming, Sarah Johnson, Minnie Linen (Henry), Ruby Lewis and Benjamin McNeil Jr.(Juanita); five godchildren, Elder Stephen M. Linen (Belva), Kareem Mills, LaRen Rowland Deloatch (Barry), LaResa Rowland and Lorenzo “Tre” Rowland, all of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Two honorary granddaughters, Cameryn & Cassidy Johnson of Aberdeen, Maryland and a multitude of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Beverly’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of Emanuel Church Of God In Christ, 1601 N 16th Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with Visitation from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM and burial in William Howard Day Cemetery.
