Mickens ~ Betty Louise Mickens was born August 13, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana to the late Shed “Jack” Phillips, Jr. and Viola Phillips. Mrs. Mickens later relocated to Brooksville, Mississippi. Mrs. Mickens professed Christ at an early age and joined Second Baptist Church in Brooksville, Mississippi.
Mrs. Mickens is the mother of three children. Her first-born child was Lisa Ogale Phillips. On December 23rd, 1960, her bundle of joy, Alice Faye Phillips was born. Later in 1967, on June 17th, she married the love of her life, Mr. William Dean Mickens Sr. whom she was blessed to share a son on June 10, 1970, William Dean Mickens Jr.
Mrs. Mickens graduated from Wilson Attendance Center and attended Mary Holmes College. Mrs. Mickens was employed by the Noxubee County public school system for thirty-six years as a Teacher’s Assistant.
Alice Hopson, her daughter from Jacksonville, Florida has two children: Alicia Geornee’ Hopson and Larry George Hopson II. William Mickens, her son, has three children: Shanteria Tate and Selena Sabrina Jackson of Macon, Mississippi, and William Dean Mickens III of Covington, Georgia.
Betty L. Mickens relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, June 2017, and united with The Bethel Church located at 215 Bethel Baptist Street, Jacksonville, Florida. Mrs. Mickens enjoyed spending time with her family, exemplifying exuberance, especially for her grandchildren. She enjoyed her students, cooking, sports, reading, puzzles, game shows, gardening, window shopping and thrifting.
On May 4, 2022, Mrs. Betty Louise Mickens departed life at Pam Specialty Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Mickens, Sr., father, Jack Phillips, mother, Viola Phillips; brothers; John Henry Phillips, Thomas Jefferson Phillips and Charles Phillips; loving sisters, that were dear to her heart, Lillie Lue Phillips Nash and Ruby Marie Phillips Smith.
Betty Mickens leaves to cherish her memories, her children, Alice Faye Phillips of Jacksonville, Florida and William Mickens of Fernandina Beach, Florida. Alicia Geornee’ Hopson, Larry George Hopson II, Shanteria Tate, Selena Sabrina Jackson, and William Dean Mickens III. She was blessed to have nine siblings: her surviving siblings are brothers, Columbus (Louise) Phillips of Columbus, Mississippi, James Earl Phillips of Brooksville, Mississippi, Ricky Lee (Sharon) Phillips of Newport News, Virginia; A loving sister Sarah Janie (Lynn) Atkinson of Meridian, Mississippi; sister-in-law, Darlene (Robert) Mickens Mixon of Brooksville, Mississippi. Special and dear to her, Laterius, Ricquorius, Blaire and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and loved ones.
Graveside Service for Mrs. Betty Louise Mickens will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 14, 2022, Brooksville Cemetery, 1884 N. Oliver Street, Brooksville, Mississippi.
