KERR ~ On Saturday, September 12th, Betty Jean Kerr, loving mother and founder of People’s Health Centers, passed away at the age of 82.
Betty was born on April 22, 1938 in Yulee, FL to Ethel Lee and Alexander Calhoun. She earned an advanced degree from St. Louis University and a degree from the Brewster Duval School of Nursing in Jacksonville FL. Focused on serving the health care needs of her community, she established People’s Clinic, later to become People’s Health Centers.
Her many accomplishments include being a founding member of the Integrated Health Network, Gateway Classic Walk of Fame Inductee, and Charter Member of the St. Louis Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
Betty had a passion for serving her community and traveling. She loved her home and her family, and entertaining others. She was known for her quick wit, business acumen, and kind, compassionate spirit.
Besides being a true southern lady to the end, she was known to all as a woman of strength, dignity and style. She loved beautiful clothes and told immensely entertaining stories of her days in Yulee and evenings watching the elders catch fish at the beach.
She wishes to be remembered as a dutiful and loving mother, as Betty is survived by her son, Dwayne; step children, Henry and Glenn; several cousins; nieces and nephews.
A public visitation will be held in St. Louis at Valhalla Chapel of Memories on September 16th from 10am-2pm. In accordance with her wishes, a private burial will take place amongst family in her birthplace and home of Yulee, FL.
