Emanuel ~ Betty Corinthia Green Emanuel passed away at her home May 8, 2023, at the age of ninety-seven. Born February 26, 1926, in St. Augustine, Florida, she was the eldest of three children. Her parents, Jack and Selina Green were both Christians who lived and worked in St. Augustine, Florida. Her father was a business owner and entertainment promoter. Her mother, who was from Key West, Florida, was an educator and owner of a primary daycare center. Betty graduated from Excelsior High School, the first high school for blacks in St. Johns County.
She later married Sidney J. Emanuel and was the mother of three children. While being a wife and mother, Betty enjoyed working in her mother-in-law’s Early Development Learning Center. She attended Edward Waters College (now Edward Waters University), Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial College (now Florida Memorial College) and received a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). Betty worked many years in the Duval County School System as a dedicated elementary school teacher, retiring in 1987. She was a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, served with the United Methodist Women (now United Women in Faith) and over the years was an encouragement to the youth.
Betty is survived by her son, Frank S. Emanuel (Hattie); daughter, Pennie Emanuel Funches; grandchildren, Fratina S. Emanuel, élan L. Simmons (Henry, Jr.), W. Royce Thomas, Warren R. Thomas (Yolanda), Aprel M. Funches, Willie R. Thomas, Frank C. Emanuel (Schareka), Wendell S. Thomas; great grandchildren, Warren R. Thomas II, Bria E. Daniels, Me-Shel K. Cooper, Kyla L. Emanuel, Tyresha L. Thomas, Arriah Thomas, Shamari C. Emanuel, Arie Thomas, Chase C. Emanuel, Latrell Wise, Romeo J. Emanuel, Cameron C. Emanuel, Harmony J. Emanuel; a host of nephews, nieces, neighbors and friends.
Mrs. Emanuel was predeceased by her husband, Sidney J. Emanuel; daughter, Beatrice Emanuel Thomas; parents, Jack and Selina Green; brother, J. Gilford Green; sister, Delores Whitfield.
Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Betty Corinthia Green Emanuel will be 11:00AM Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 9114 Norfolk Boulevard. Visitation Friday from 4:30 – 6:00 PM at The Church. Interment in Restlawn Memorial Park. Because of the love of her family, arrangements entrusted to J. E.
