HOWARD ~ Elder Anthony Howard was born February 28, 1938 in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Henry Howard and Evelyn Vaughn. He was one of ten children and attended Booker T. Washington High School in the Orleans Parish School System. Anthony served his country faithfully in the United States Navy for two years and received an honorable discharge. He was a welder at Avondale shipyard most of his life, and later retired from Home Depot.
From childhood, he was a member of Second Progressive Baptist Church, pastored by his grandfather, the late Reverend Oscar Walker. He was born again, filled with the Holy Spirit and was an ordained Minister at Abiding Temple Church, pastored by the late Pastor Rita McCarty Smith. From there God led him to join the Lion of Judah, Apostle Rhonda Evans.
Anthony and Lula were married October 1, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Institutional Church where they served under Bishop Rudolph W. McKissick, Sr.
Anthony Howard departed this life January 9, 2021 at the age of 82 years old. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Donald Girtley, Jr.; father, Henry Howard; mother, Evelyn Vaughn Dent; grandparents, Pearl and Oscar Walker; brothers, Raymond Taylor and Paul A. Taylor; sister, Marion Cooper. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife, Lula Howard; son, Michael Howard; daughters, Katherine Howard Bernard (Kenneth), Angel Wiggins (Desmond); grandchildren, Kalvin Anthony Bernard, Kerry Joseph Bernard, Torrence Howard II, and Racquel Howard; great grandchildren, Kalvin Bernard Jr., Jaylah Bernard, Ariyanna Bernard, Donald Girtley III, Kaiden Girtley, Zaykeem Cox and Torrence Howard II; brothers, Kenneth Vaughn, Pastor Carl A. Taylor, Sr., Wilbert Gibson, Jr.; sisters, Linda Warren, Shelia Keller, Yolanda Morgan, Patricia Gibson; a host of nephews, nieces, many other family and friends.
Celebration of Life Service for Elder Anthony Howard will be graveside Wednesday, January 20, 2021, 12:30 PM at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road.
