Alfred Benefield

Benefield ~ Alfred Benefield was born May 22, 1938, in Jacksonville, Florida and was the son of Geraldine Benefield Johnson and stepfather, Herman Johnson. He attended New Stanton Senior High School and attained bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Edward Waters College & Texas Southern University, where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. Al also served his country in the United States Army, with an honorable discharge. 

His thrilling athletic career began as first, a dynamic football player at Edward Waters College, and later, as one of EWC’s football coaches. Al’s excellent coaching abilities lead him to Texas Southern University, as an assistant coach, and later to become the head football coach of Texas Southern University. His athletic career also included becoming a golf instructor at Jacksonville University.

In later years, he became a successful and dedicated Deputy Director of Jacksonville Opportunities Industrialization Center (JOIC), and eventually becoming the Executive Director. After retirement, Al kept himself busy as a Mathematics Instructor at Florida State College of Jacksonville and playing in golf tournaments at TPC of Jacksonville with many friends.

He was predeceased by his son, Gary Benefield and mother, Geraldine Johnson. Family members will cherish many happy memories of Al, children, Alana Benefield-Kellam, Alfred D’John Benefield (Dana), Judy Benefield, Joyce Benefield; grandchildren, Keante Benefield, Kennedi Kellam, Danae Benefield, Kayla Benefield, Adam Benefield, Liam Benefield, LaKeisha Jenkins, and Stephan Benefield; a host of great grandchildren; sisters, Cecelia Brooks, Rebecca Jerido, and Joann Jones; many nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends. 

Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Alfred Benefield, 8 AM Friday, December 24, 2021, at The Soutel Chapel.   Visitation Thursday from 5 – 7 PM at The Soutel Chapel.  Interment at Jacksonville National Cemetery.  Because of the love of his family, arrangements entrusted to J.
